General News: January, 2012 It is with a heavy and broken heart that I post this update. Donald Edwin Hernlund. My love, my soul-mate, my companion of 40 years was taken from me today, January 8, 2012 at 2:35 am in Sedona, Arizona. He fought a gallant 5 month battle to recover but could not overcome the obstacles that were in his path. For those of you who knew him well, you know that he was a very special person. For those who only knew him for a short time, you had a glimpse of what he was all about and for those who did not know him personally, you will never know what you missed. Don was a person who would give everything for you and ask nothing in return, he would go out of his way to help anyone who was in need, he was the best friend you could ever ask for and was always there when any need arose. He was a great father and the best husband any woman could ever want. His personality was disarming and charming, his sense of humor was infectious and he was one of a kind. I want to thank everyone who supported Don and I, especially me, through this very difficult time and want you all to know he loved every one of you in his own special way. For me, the support that I received from everyone was what helped guide me through the dark days behind and now the darker days ahead. I close now knowing that every one of you will remember and miss him in your own way and each of you has been blessed with his friendship in somewhere along the way. There will be no formal service or memorial because, in one of his last statements to me, he said, “you all can come to the house, party all day and drink to my health, BUT don’t spend one red cent to a money grabbing funeral home to host that party.” His sense of humor was there until the last. As always, If you would like to call and talk I am always available and if I don’t answer for the next couple of days please be understanding and leave me a message. Thank you and God bless all. Sandie
General News: February, 2011 Wednesday, February 9: I am far ahead of my goal and have entered almost 400 recipes into the Cooking Forum as of today at 10:30 pm. I have finished through the Pets (Dog) category. Check them out and see if there might be something there that you want to make tonight. Monday, February 7: I have decided it is time to do some serious updating to the Cooking Forum. This month I will be entering a boat-load of recipes in as many of the categories as I can. I hope to have at least 300 recipes entered by the end of the month. I have burned myself out with my crafts and needlework and need to take a break from them. I have started with A (Appetizers) today and will work, one category at a time, through to V (Vegetables). Hope you like the recipes and enjoy making them for your family and guests. HAPPY COOKING - GOOD EATING!!
General News: January, 2011 It's a new year and hope run high that this will be a better year. we are doing well and still loving the rural life. we have had our ups and downs but mostly up. We have had a couple of surprises in the last month or so. We had a real blizzard here the last week of December and first week of January and ended up with about 2" of snow on the ground and the temps were down in the teens at night and the 20's during the day. I took plenty of pictures of Rimrock and the surrounding mountains as well as the San Francisco Peaks and Flagstaff. I have posted video and pictures of the snow and wicked weather on the Fotki site so if you want to see them just click on the link above. Terry came up to see us on Christmas day and took us on a day trip to Flagstaff to see the snow. We went to the Snow Bowl and almost up to the Grand Canyon Park. It was one of the best Christmas Gifts he could have given us. Spending the day together and having fun. I have been working on my crafts and building my stash of afghans, shawls, socks/boots, hats and lace. If you are interested in any of them please go to the Craft Form and check out the latest projects. The most popular seems to bee the hats and Dorm Boots but there is plenty of interest in the afghans. They put spending money in the pocket so I can't complain. I just want to wish everyone a prosperous New Year and a happy life. Here's hoping that everyone has the year they wished for and more.
General News: September, 2010 We have been in Rimrock, Arizona for 4 months and it has been the best decision we have ever made. The air is clean and fresh, rush hour consists of 4 or 5 cars on the road to Cornville or Cottonwood and a traffic jam is when you have to wait more than 30 seconds to turn in any direction!. When the temp in Phoenix is 111' it may be only 91' up here. At night it gets down to around 50' - 55'. Every afternoon it will cloud up and 50% of the time we will get a small rain storm. Life could be better but I don't know how. We have all kinds of wild animals up here. During the day it is common for mule and white tail deer to come to the back of the yard for food that I put out. Early morning and late evening will bring gray squirrels and skunks (leave them alone and they leave you alone) to the feeders. The raccoons have been here but we haven't yet seen them. Around 1:00 - 2:00 in the morning the Javalina (wild pigs) come in to feed on the pods from the Mesquite trees. They usually number about 4-5 and the drove (yes, that's what you call a group of pigs) is made up of one big boar and smaller sows. The birds here are spectacular. We have North American Goldfinch, Red-Headed Woodpeckers, Blue Jays and various other birds that I haven't yet figured out. We have acquired two new family members. August 11 we adopted Joy, a 7 month old Beagle mix from the local animal shelter in Camp Verde, Arizona. We only went in to see the animals and had no intention of coming home with a dog (RIGHT!) Not ever having a beagle, I was not fully prepared for the energy, willfulness and single minded obsession that beagles possess. When she fixates on something nothing short of death will get her to leave it or forget it. She has often found something on a walk one day and will make a beeline two days later to the same spot and hunt for whatever it was until she finds it or something new to occupy her thoughts. She know where every water source along the road is and every place that wild animals might be. If she finds a body of water, she is in it in a heartbeat. She love the water, any kind, as long as it is wet. We have a small creek just down the road from the house and it has become a daily ritual to walk down there and she goes exploring and swimming. if we go to a park that has any kind of pond or lake, well, you know what comes next. She gets along, more or less, with the cats and there is always an uneasy peace in the house until someone make a wrong move, lays in someone else's spot or just decides to create mayhem. At that point it's get out of the way or get run down. Generally everyone gets along. September 5 we were adopted by "Q" (cute). She is a tortoise shell colored 6 week old kitten who called to me from a box in the back of a van in Basha's parking lot in camp Verde, Arizona. Thankfully I kept my wits about me and didn't come home with the other 5 kittens. She was the only one of the litter that just sat there in the box and seemed to be watching the world go by while her bothers and sisters were climbing out of the box trying to escape. There was just something about her that told me she had to come home with us. What the heck, we already had 4 cats, what's another one? They don't eat much and the keep the bugs away and they are lovable and cute, and......... Damn! I can come up with all the excuses in the world and don't really need one. She was, and is, cute and cuddly and she needed to go home with ME! So, she did. Joy thinks she is her personal chew toy and we have to keep an eye on the two of them so "Q" doesn't get hurt. When she gets bigger she will learn how to use her weapons and be able to fight her own battles. Her name? She was so cute that we had to name her "Q" Bedtime in our house is a real challenge. Five cats and a dog don't leave much room for us but they grudgingly give us a little room and some of the blankets. Time to meet the two newest babies
General News: June, 2010 We finally made the move out of Phoenix and up to Northern Arizona. On May 19th the movers were at our apartment in Phoenix and started loading our belongings and by 2:30 pm we were in our new home in Rimrock, Arizona. Rimrock is 10 miles north of Camp Verde, Arizona, 30 miles from Prescott, Arizona, 46 miles from Flagstaff, Arizona and 35 miles from Cottonwood, Arizona. We are in a beautiful home which is 1800 sq ft, 3 BR, 2 Bath and open living/dining area. We have a large lot but no fence and as a result we can see all the wildlife that is up here coming through our back and front yard. There is quail and other birds and we can hear but haven't yet seen the coyotes, deer and Javalina. The air is clean, there is no traffic noise and best of all, there are very few people. We are in a very small cluster of about 15 houses on a dead end gravel road just 2 miles from the Montezuma Well National Monument and about 6 miles East of the town of Rimrock. After 5:00 pm the monument's gates close so there is virtually no traffic on the main road after that time What more could anyone want? Rimrock has a population of about 1500 people spread over a very large area. Most people up here are retired just like us or own little shops and stores that we all patronize. I have been making video files of the various stages of the move and what we have been doing. You can watch the movies by clicking on the link above and going to our Fotki site. When there, just click on the Hernlund Video Files album and then click on the various movie icons to watch them. The best part of all is the climate up here. Our temperature is about 15 degrees lower than the Valley and when it is 110' in Phoenix, we have about 90'. The only time I have to turn on the AC is for about 1 hour in the afternoon when the west sun beats on the back of the house. Then the sun goes down behind the mountain behind us and it immediately cools down enough to open the windows and doors again. At night I leave the windows open and we actually have to have a blanket on the bed. Keep coming back to see how we are doing. Have a good summer and until later, be safe. Don & sandie
General News: March, 2010 A lot has been going on over the past 13 months. The economy caught me and I was laid off from Wells Fargo on August 21, 2009. With the recession the way it was and still is, I decided that now was a good time to take my retirement. Jobs are scarce or just plain non-existent here so instead of waiting until I turned 65, I am taking my Social Security at 62. I was paid by Wells Fargo until December 2009 and then I started collecting unemployment. I started getting my Social Security in December 2009 and I have been looking for part time work since I can make up to a certain amount and still get my full Social Security. So if I can find part time work, maybe 2-3 days per week, it can help to supplement what we both get each month. As of this month I haven't had any bites on my job hunt and my unemployment will run out in early June. We are planning on leaving the Phoenix Metro area and re-locating to Northern Arizona. The Prescott/Verde Valley area is where we plan on going. This area is considered a depressed area and rents are very reasonable. We can easily live on our combined Social Security each month and still live very well. A house much larger than the apartment we are currently in is only half the rent we are now paying. Can't beat that with a stick! We plan on renting a home instead of an apartment since I would like to have a yard again and do some gardening. We hope to be making the move some time in June and will privately post everyone on where we are going and what the new address will be. Everyone here is doing well. Don is now using a walker due to a health issue and a tendency to "fall over" easily. I am hoping that once we get moved we will be able to get out more and start walking which will improve his condition. This is not something that is easy to do where we are now. Take a look at the Craft Forum, Crochet Section and the "NEW" Hats section. It has been extensively re-worked and I have combined a lot of the Pgs and added a couple of new Pgs. I have been working on a collection of hats and all are for sale as well as Fruit Jar covers and some shawls. I still have some afghans for sale (made after 01/01/2009). Look for the "FOR SALE" tag and, if interested, please send e-mail for more information. I am also going to do some work in the cooking section so keep an eye out for new additions. I know, I know, I have said this before and nothing happened but this time I will be doing some additions by the end of this month. With my new recipe software it is going to be very easy for my to transfer recipes over instead of having to re-type them. Pastries and goodies are going to be first!! I also have a cookbook available in PDF format containing 1,150 recipes. If you are interested in having a copy, please send e-mail for more information. In the meantime, Happy Easter to all and everyone have a great Spring. Don, Sandie & "Children"
Happy Holidays: December 2008 Don, myself and the rest of
the "children" want to send our best wishes for a
Moving Along: April 6, 2008 Here we go again! We are moving to a new and larger (3BR, 2B - 1500/SF) apartment. It is much closer to my work (4 miles round trip opposed to the current 16 miles round trip), it is on the ground floor so Don will not have to negotiate the stairs any longer. The rent is reasonable and the savings in fuel, the utilities are included in the rent, it is half again larger than our current (2BR, 2B - 950/SF) apartment and has a very large enclosed and gated private patio where we can have our own BBQ is reason to celebrate. I will be taking part of my vacation from May 16 through June 2. Our move will happen on May 20 and the movers should have us into the new place by evening on that day. To those who care, I will be sending our new address by e-mail and, of course, our phones and e-mail addresses will remain the same. Although I may not have the computers up and running for a day or two
Craft Forum: April 2008 Come in and see what I have been doing in the craft department. Socks and doilies have been on the menu for a couple of months. There have been many additions. If there are any patterns that you would like to have, just e-mail me and I will send them to you if they are not copyrighted.
General News: August 29, 2007 It has been a very busy year so far. Saturday is our 34th anniversary, Sunday will be Terry's 35th birthday and tomorrow I will have been on my job for one year. I love it and plan to be there for a very long time. It really feels good to be with a company that is stable and will exist far into the future. For awhile, over the last 4 years, I was beginning to think that I was destined to work for losers for the rest of my life. But that is all behind us now and we are getting firmly back on our feet. We have had some medical issues this year but they are now behind us and things are looking up. Don lost his brother just after the New Year and he had a hard time getting though that. Our grand-daughter graduated from high school in May and we are very proud of her. The cats are all still here and, of course, they rule the roost. The weather in Arizona has been fierce and we have had over 30 straight days of 110' or higher heat. Just today it was 112' while I was on my way home from work at 4:30 in the afternoon. We haven't had any rain to speak of and the situation here is dry, dry, dry. Now, for the website. I have been very lax in updating anything over the past months but I plan on correcting that very soon. I still have all of the additions and corrections that everyone has sent me, I just haven't been able to find the time to get them entered. I started a week long vacation today and plan on spending some quality time making some major updates. I have just gotten a new Black Berry phone and learned how to make my own ringers. So, I have created a page for these ringers and if anyone wants them, be my guest. I plan on uploading a lot of oldies from the 50's, 60's and 70's. I am going through my library of music that contains a little over 1,000 mp3's and making quite a few ringers. If you own a Black Berry, you will know how to get them downloaded into your phone. Keep in mind that these are for the Black Berry but may work on other smart phones. Just click on the "Phone Ring Tones" button on the home page and you can see what I have available. By the way, if you have a Black Berry and would like to have a particular ringer, send me an e-mail and I'll see what I can do to make it for you and upload it to the ringers page. I have been doing more lace
making and working on a few cross stitch projects and a couple of afghan
projects. I hope to get all of the pictures and descriptions uploaded
tonight. Working on my crafts is about the only thing that keeps me sane
these days.
Animals: September 2006 This has been an eventful summer. I lost my job on June 6 to yet another company closing it's doors. But on August 30 I landed another great job and hope to be there for a very long time. I don't think this company is going to go anywhere considering it is a big part of the banking industry and their logo features a stagecoach. We acquired another family member. Now we can truly say that cat hair is a condiment. A couple of weeks ago, our son & daughter-in-law were on their way to work in one of our great Arizona monsoons. They spotted a tiny kitten in the MIDDLE of the intersection of a flooded street. Cars were going around it and over it so Terry pulled over to the side of the road, jumped out in the rain and rescued kitten. Then, of course, he called me and asked if we could take it in (he can't have a cat in his house). I can not say no to a wayward animal so I told him to bring it over. Below you can meet Stormy. She is about 6 weeks old in this picture and has turned out to be the sweetest thing. The other girls and boys have accepted her and all is well.

Cooking Forum: September 2006 Take a look.
You'll find tips & tricks, recipes and general good food information. Send
me a recipe and I'll put it up on the site with your name as contributor.
You don't have to be family, you only have to enjoy good food
& cooking!
Animals: May 2006 You all know how we feel about our animals. They are like our children.
On January 30, 2006 @ 12:30 am, our friend dog, Tory, passed away from heart failure. She has been ill for a while and she finally couldn't stay with us any longer. She has been a part of our family for 14 years and she was a good friend and companion. She is in a better place now and our hearts are sad. We will miss her and we wish her a good journey and will keep her in our hearts.
No other animal will ever replace Tory but she loved our cats and considered them as one of her kind. She would have approved of the newest bundle of fur to come into our family. On May 4, 2006, we brought home a 7 week old calico girl named Patches. It only took about 3 days for Missy and Boo to accept her and now Missy thinks that she is a mom.
